Approximately
half an hours drive from Granada, and just over two hours from
El Presidente, is the
Spanish ski
resort in
the Sierra Nevada.
As
the southern-most skiing resort in Spain and Europe, the Sierra
Nevada offers
a tremendous combination
of
good skiing/snow boarding, excellent ski schools, very good facilities,
easy access and plentiful parking. Also as a result of its geographical
location it
has a remarkable climate that often provides very good skiing conditions,
usually in brilliant sunshine with
remarkably
warm temperatures so that you can enjoy skiing without having
to weigh
yourself down with too many layers of clothing - applying plenty
of sun tan cream is strongly advised! Although it does
indeed
snow here (and occasionally the weather can even
turn nasty!),
the resort has one of the most advanced snowmaking systems in
Europe
enabling
the
skiing
season
to last
from at least
November through to April.
Most
visitors opt to stay in the resort's village of Borregiles with
its easy access to the slopes. All your equipment needs can be
arranged
here,
as
can
ski
lessons for all ability levels with english speaking instructors
with individual or small group classes.
For
skiers and snow boarders there are 87kms of runs -11 green,
35 blue, 36 red and 5 black. There are also nursery slopes
for those who are just learning to ski, indeed it is a wonderful
place to introduce families with children to the wonderful
delights of skiing! Gondolas quickly transport skiers to the
base station at 2100m
with
16
chairlifts
then
taking skiers
to the various runs (see above). Restaurants and bars are also
located at various points, including three at the base station
itself.

The
resort village of Borregiles has a good range of facilities with
numerous restaurants, bars, equipment hire shops
and mini-supermarkets.
The
apres-ski tradition of a refreshing drink and tapas in the village
is a wonderful way to relax and soak up the late afternoon sun
whilst also enjoying the spectacular views.
For
accommodation visitors can choose between hotels ranging up to
5*, apart-hotels
and rental apartments.
For
those with families we particularly recommend the Trevenque Apartments
(see below) which is an apart-hotel because of its excellent
location in the village, good
quality apartments and friendly staff. Also, as well as having
a good restaurant and cosy lounge, the apartments in the Trevenque
have their own kitchen areas and lounges that offer the option
of
self-catering.
Indeed for those visitors with families this is particularly useful
as you can feed hungry children when needed and with what they
want
whilst also being able to either eat in the restaurant or one of
the many others that are just a short walk away.
A
vast underground car park below the resort is the most convenient
place to leave your car with many of the hotels, like the Trevenque,
having direct access to their apartments and rooms.
Given the closeness of the Sierra Nevada to El Presidente, it
is indeed possible to be skiing here in the morning and lounging
by the
pool
in El Presidente
later
the
same
day. A remarkable and probably unique idea!!
